Clean Mobility Buffalo to double Reddy’s footprint on Buffalo’s East Side

As part of a multi-organizational initiative kicking off this month, Reddy Bikeshare is doubling its station footprint on Buffalo's East Side, aiming to enhance connectivity and provide more convenient mobility options. Pedal bikes and Reddy+ Bikes, the name of our e-bike fleet introduced in October, will be available to unlock at both existing and new stations across East Side neighborhoods. (Our ninth season will be launching in a few weeks. Stay Tune.)

GObike Buffalo’s Health Streets Initiative is gathering feedback on where folks would like Reddy Bikeshare stations located. (See link). Their survey tool is also gathering input on where east side residents would like to a pop-up traffic-calming project.

In conjunction with the project, titled Clean Mobility Buffalo (See link for website), Reddy Bikeshare, in partnership with Independent Health, is launching a discounted annual pass program to serve East Side residents. The East Side Forward Pass costs $3 per year and is available to adults living on Buffalo’s East Side. Folks with the pass can unlock a Reddy Bike for $0.01 per minute and unlock a Reddy+ Bike for $0.10 per minute. Registration requires a valid East Side address and a pre-paid cash card, debit card or credit card. The Pass officially launches at East Side Forward Expo, Saturday, March 16.

Organizers of Clean Mobility Buffalo today announced the East Side Forward Expo, celebrating the investment of $10 million for clean transportation improvements throughout Buffalo’s East Side, educating attendees on the projects underway, and sparking important conversations about equitable access to transportation.

This completely free event, happening Saturday, March 16 at Northland Workforce Training Center from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., officially launches the Clean Mobility Buffalo initiative. East Side Forward Expo welcomes the community to engage in fun, family-friendly activities, valuable demos and workshops, and informative presentations, while enjoying refreshments, entering the Expo raffle, and taking home some Clean Mobility swag.

Funded by New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) under the New York Clean Transportation Prizes Program, Clean Mobility Buffalo is an alliance organized by LISC NY, Heart of the City Neighborhoods, and Open Buffalo—and activated in East Side neighborhoods by project partners including Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Coalition for Economic Justice, East Side Bike Club, GObike, and Reddy Bikeshare.

Together as partners—working with and for the community—these dynamic organizations are championing a shared vision for a cleaner, healthier, and more connected East Side, identifying current transportation challenges and introducing innovative, environmentally friendly, and health-conscious alternatives for all.

“Clean Mobility Buffalo represents a historic investment in expanding sustainable and

accessible transportation options in a neighborhood that has been historically under-resourced,” said  Tyra Johnson Hux, Western New York operations director for LISC NY. “Upgrading infrastructure and promoting cleaner transit methods is a key part of narrowing disparities, closing the racial wealth gap, and equipping underserved communities and
their members to be successful.”

Tendaji Ya’Ukuu, Ecological Justice Coordinator for Open Buffalo, speaks to reporters at Clean Mobility Buffalo’s Press Conference, March 12.

Thanks to this investment and the work of the Clean Mobility Buffalo alliance, the East Side community—where one in three households walks, bikes, or takes public transit to work—will have better access to essential elements of safe, reliable, and accessible infrastructure that have long been ignored. This includes clear crosswalks, protected bike lanes and trails, organized carpools, safely designated bus stops, and more.

Vital progress has been made in the year since the funds were awarded, beginning with the formation of Clean Mobility Buffalo’s Neighborhood Leadership Group. This team of more than 20 community leaders, deeply rooted in Buffalo’s East Side, has been actively involved in exploring clean transportation possibilities, advancing transit education, and connecting with neighbors on the East Side to gather feedback and share updates.

“Being a voice for my people when it comes to new projects in our communities is very important for me,” said Crystal Davis, member of Clean Mobility Buffalo’s Neighborhood Leadership Group. ”I get as much information as I can and take it back to my community—I want us to have the same opportunities as people who live in other communities.”

As the process of bringing partners on board continues, GObike and Reddy Bikeshare have completed a rigorous discovery and planning process and are now working to implement the first pair of Clean Mobility Buffalo projects—the revival of bike and walking trails and the expansion of an e-bikeshare.

Embracing the community’s vision, Clean Mobility Buffalo’s shared objectives are clear: Make it easier and safer to bike and walk; Provide sustainable transportation incentives to the largest East Side employers; Develop small business and green workforce development education; Reimagine how connected neighborhoods will strengthen our community.

Join Clean Mobility at the East Side Forward Expo on Saturday, March 16 to learn more
about the alliance and the work happening throughout the East Side. A detailed description and full programming information for the event is available on Eventbrite, where attendees are encouraged to register.
